I saw this Reddit post asking about solo activities in Galveston. It got me thinking. A lot of cruise passengers have a day or even just an evening to explore the island before they leave or after they get back. But where should they actually go?
I live here in Galveston and run Pubs N’ Grubs Tours Galveston. I wanted to share the spots locals actually recommend for adults traveling solo. Whether you drink or not, here is your guide to experiencing real Galveston on your own.
This is an adults guide. If you are traveling with family, my sister runs Taste of the Strand, a family friendly food tour. But this guide is all about what adults can do solo in Galveston.
How Close Is Everything?
Here is something most visitors do not realize. Everything I am about to mention is at most a 20 minute walk from where cruise ships dock. You can get to all of these spots easily on foot.
My tour starts just 9 minutes walking in a straight line from the Railroad Museum. About 15 to 18 minutes from the center of the Strand. So when you dock, you are already in the perfect spot to explore.
The Trolley: A Vintage Island Experience
One of the coolest things you can do in Galveston is ride the trolley. This is not just transportation. This is an experience.
The trolley is vintage. Like really old school vintage. It costs just a buck for 3 hours of exploring the entire island. Kids ride free. Disabled people ride free. So if you have time, you really do not need a car or rideshare. You can see the whole island for a dollar.
You roll past historic buildings, the seawall, local neighborhoods. It gives you a feel for the whole island at a slow, relaxed pace. That is what island time is all about.
But here is the thing. The trolley is amazing for seeing Galveston. But you would likely miss out on most of the spots I am about to tell you about because they are not all on the trolley route. Check out my complete trolley guide here for routes and timing.

For Food Lovers (Drinkers & Non-Drinkers)
Old Moon Deli — My Personal Favorite
This downtown deli serves the best Reuben sandwich I have ever had in my entire life. I am not exaggerating. The balance is perfect. The flavor, the filling, the bread. Everything. I love having it with a cigar. I eat while I smoke. Finish the sandwich. Finish the smoke after. It is satisfaction on so many levels. Even if you do not drink or smoke, this sandwich alone is worth the trip.
Devil and the Deep 🍺
This place has one of the longest standing and best brown ale beers I have ever had in my life. It is worth stopping in just for that beer alone. Seriously. Any beer drinker needs to try this.
This spot is not on my tour because it is a bit further away. But that legendary beer is absolutely worth the walk if you love craft beer.
Katie’s Seafood House
Located right on the harbor. This is boat to table dining. They get their seafood from their own market so you know it is fresh. Great spot if you are eating alone. Sit at the bar or grab a quiet table with harbor views.
Habanos Cuban Café
Real Cuban food in a chill atmosphere. Perfect for solo lunch or dinner. No pressure to order drinks. Also, this place is smoker friendly if that matters to you.
Shrimp N Stuff
This place has been serving Galveston since 1976. Casual and cozy. Their fried seafood is what they are known for. No frills. Just really good food.
Mama Teresa’s Flying Pizza
This is the best pizza you will find. It tastes exactly like the best pizza in Italy. I am serious. The only problem is it is downtown where parking is hard. But if you can deal with that or you are walking anyway, it is worth it.
Mario’s Flying Pizza
This is a close second to Mama Teresa’s. The main difference is location. Mario’s is on the seawall with tons of parking and super easy to get in and out. Great pizza with ocean views.
The Spot
Right on the seawall with no barrier between you and the beach. Grab a burger and a Coke. Sit outside. Watch the waves. Simple and perfect.
For People Who Appreciate Beautiful Buildings
The Strand Historic District
This Victorian era district is perfect for walking around by yourself. Unique shops. Art galleries. Cool architecture. Lots of places to grab coffee or a snack. No agenda needed. Just explore and see what you find. My tour happens here at night when the local music scene comes alive.
Moody Mansion
This place is so beautiful. You tour this preserved mansion at your own pace. It gives you a real look at what life was like during the island’s golden age. Definitely worth a visit.
1892 Bishop’s Palace
One of the most important examples of Victorian architecture in America. The self guided tour lets you take your time and really look at all the intricate details. No rushing.
For Drinkers: Evening Entertainment
Naked Iguana Brewery
Great craft beer selection in a relaxed adult atmosphere. Here is the cool part. You can bring outside food in. And they are dog friendly inside. Perfect for a solo evening drink without the loud crazy bar scene.
Pubs N’ Grubs Tours Galveston 🍹
Okay I am biased because this is my tour. But here is why it works for solo travelers. You are never actually alone. Most nights we have local live music. You meet other cruise passengers and locals while we explore the Strand’s best pubs and restaurants.
Timing: 35% of our guests take the tour the day before their cruise. 15% book it the evening they get back because they are staying an extra day or two.
The tour is drinks forward with a local vibe and live music when available. You get to experience the nightlife with a group and a guide who knows where to go and what to order.
For Relaxation Seekers
Grand Galvez Hotel & Spa
Even if you are not staying here, the Grand Galvez offers day spa services. Massages. Facials. Salon treatments. They have a free form saline pool and hot tub on the eastern terrace that overlooks the beach. Pure relaxation before or after your cruise. And their bar drinks are awesome.
Spa San Luis
Another great option for massages, body treatments, manicures, and pedicures. Perfect if you want to pamper yourself before setting sail.
For Families: Taste of the Strand
Like I mentioned earlier, if you are traveling with family or just prefer a non-alcoholic daytime experience, my sister runs Taste of the Strand. It is a family friendly food tour. Completely different vibe from my evening pub tour, but perfect for daytime exploration.
Final Thoughts
Galveston is not just a cruise port. It is a real island with real culture and incredibly welcoming locals. Whether you have 4 hours or 2 days, there is something here for every type of adult traveler.
The Reddit conversation that got me thinking about this asked about solo activities. But honestly, most of these spots are great whether you are alone, with a partner, or with friends. The island has a way of making everyone feel at home.
