The new waitlist feature, implemented through FareHarbor’s booking platform, allows solo travelers to sign up individually and receive notifications when enough participants register to open a tour — ending the frustrating requirement of purchasing multiple tickets just to experience Galveston’s authentic nightlife scene.

“I’ve been in these shoes myself many times on activities I wanted to participate in, both when younger, and as well as now being older, and felt sad there was no one with the vision for a solution,” said Robert Alexander, owner and guide of Pubs N’ Grubs Tours Galveston. “I’d rather focus on helping solo travelers feel more comfortable on excursions and activities, whether they’re married or single—I’ve experienced both perspectives.” “I’ve heard the same stories of travelers on my sister’s tours all through COVID lockdowns and even afterwards when I filled in as a guide a few times.”

The problem is surprisingly common: tour operators require minimum party sizes to remain profitable, but solo travelers — who now represent an estimated 60% of Pubs N’ Grubs clientele — are forced to either pay for ghost tickets or skip the experience entirely.

Get Matched: When enough solo adventurers register to meet the tour’s 3-4 person minimum, all waitlisted guests receive a notification
Book if You Want: Notified guests then have the opportunity to complete their booking and payment, with no obligation or sunk costs if plans change

“The traditional booking process forces guests to prepay without knowing whether they’ll get a spot for sure and wait,” Alexander explained. “I don’t want this for myself, therefore no one else. This is why I have it set this way, its a unique approach, but what my mind requires.”

Monday-Wednesday: 4PM & 7PM (Waitlist Available)
Thursday-Friday: 4PM (Waitlist Available) | 7PM (Book Now)
Saturday-Sunday: 11AM & 2PM (Waitlist Available) | 5PM & 8PM (Book Now)

High-demand evening tours on weekends remain immediately bookable, while the waitlist optimizes slower time slots and weekday tours.

Addressing Post-Pandemic Travel Trends

The timing aligns with broader shifts in the travel industry. Solo travel surged during and after the pandemic, with mature adults aged 30-66 increasingly seeking authentic local experiences over tourist-trap bar crawls. Cruise passengers — who comprise roughly 50% of Galveston tour bookings, split between pre-cruise (35%) and post-cruise (15%) travelers — have expressed particular frustration with rigid booking requirements.

“I also know from travels and even at home, sometimes I stay behind or back because of my wife,” Alexander explained. “I want everyone, whether they’re quiet or just mature, to appreciate the theme of this unique tour, which focuses on vibe, island-time, Pura Vida, or just local drinks, local casual foods, or local invisible vibes that people sync into. It’s a pleasure seeing this transformation happen.”

“The real truth is, I’d already have it working if there was a booking strategy and platform that allowed me to do what I want,” he said. “One day I may just have to build it myself since others won’t. Until then, this is my next step.”

He envisions a future where Pubs N’ Grubs operates at sufficient scale to accommodate even single-guest tours — ensuring no one misses experiencing authentic Galveston nightlife simply because others aren’t available during their time slot.
